THE MISSION OF

CANTON CITY SCHOOLS LEGACY & DESTINY FOUNDATION, Inc.

 Preamble:

To see and reach greater heights, one generation may have to stand on the shoulders of the prior generation, but then has the responsibility to lift the next generation on its own strong shoulders;

When we attended school here, we were blessed by the efforts of generations of students and alumni before us who had built a storied legacy of honesty, pride and success;

This storied legacy nurtured us while we were in school and imbued our lives and those of our families with traditions and character, which helped to lead us to a destiny rich in life’s lessons and memories;

Like anything of value, this storied legacy, which enriched us in our youth and beyond, was not easily built, but instead required individual and community honesty, openness, pride, dedication, and financial investment;

Further, like most things of great value and importance, the storied legacy, which we inherited, will disappear if abused or neglected;

Our mission requires us, as the generations who have been blessed by this legacy, and who now have the power and resources to preserve this legacy, to make similar investments of time and resources, as did those who came before us. Only by our efforts will current and future generations of students and their families recognize that a successful legacy is built on the pillars of honesty, openness, pride, dedication and personal sacrifice and investment;

If we stand by and allow individual agendas to control, divide and destroy the legacy which was passed on to us, our inaction will destroy the work of those that came before us and dim the destiny of students who follow us.

Mission:

The Mission of the Canton City Schools Legacy & Destiny Foundation is to recognize and honor the proud history of Canton City Schools and to support a destiny of excellence for current and future students by building up the foundation established by past generations.

Goals:

The overarching goal of the Foundation is to assure that the tradition of the district is upheld and continues so that current and future students have access to the same quality education and experiences that previous generations had. To accomplish this, the specific goals of the Foundation may include:

Accountability.

 Holding the Canton City School District’s Board of Education and Administration accountable by:

  1. Having a presence at Board meetings and on various system or school committees;
  2.  Making strong, collective statements on various issues that represent the desires of the community at large; and/or
  3. Assuring that the BOE and/or Administration conduct business in a fundamentally sound, efficient, and effective manner.

Education and Resources.

Informing the public about various topics and being a resource to the students, their parents, and the greater Canton community.  Potential projects may include:

  1. Developing summaries of candidates for the BOE and/or assisting with the establishment of a stronger slate of candidates;
  2. A website with a repository of educational resources (e.g. financial aid for college, learning tools, access to school supplies, information about special programs, etc.;
  3. Sponsoring public forums or guest speakers on topics of interest; and/or
  4. Establishing a scholarship fund.

Youth Leadership.

Today’s youth will become tomorrow’s leaders.  Recognizing this, the Foundation hopes to establish opportunities for high school students to be actively involved in the organization, their schools, and the community so as to better prepare them for future careers and endeavors.  Potential opportunities include:

  1. Serving as a member of the Board of Directors as a student representative;
  2. Participation on a Foundation student advisory board that can speak for the masses with concerns they may have that may not be deemed important enough to go before the BOE; and/or
  3. Access to experience in the business realm (e.g. mentoring or coop program), volunteer opportunities in the community, or support for individual pursuit of significant achievement.

Where Does Your Donation Go, as of Today?

This is not a non-profit organization. Obtaining non-profit status typically takes about six months, so that's still down the road.

We are in the process of developing Articles of Incorporation so that we can file with the Ohio Secretary of State to be recognized as an organization. Once the Articles are finalized, which will include the identification of the members of the Board of Directors, mission statement and purpose, we will make them available to everyone. We hope to be able to complete the Articles this Friday.

Because we aren’t yet recognized by the state as an organization, we aren’t able to set up a bank account in the organization’s name. As such, at this point, the only funds being collected are being done through a PayPal account. The reason we went this route to get started is because PayPal provides an itemized list of donations received....it's not possible for us to alter that list. At the same time, we are able to produce detailed information regarding contributions to date.

Our mission statement says, “To see and reach greater heights, one generation may have to stand on the shoulders of the prior generation, but then has the responsibility to lift the next generation on its own strong shoulders." We are an organization, taking on that responsibility, that is established to demand fundamentally sound governance and operations within the Canton City School district, to assure effectiveness and efficiency, and to be a resource and support to the residents and students of the Canton City School District. As such, in an overall sense, that is what the funds generated will be used for. To that end, initial funds will likely be used to challenge what we see as a dysfunctional Board of Education.

I’m sure I haven’t fully addressed your concerns. It is my hope that, as we move forward in our development, all of your questions will be answered and that we will demonstrate the integrity necessary to garner your support.
